lyrics
On the North Bay Fires of 2017
On the night the devil escaped from hell
the winds began to howl;
the fire danced, the smoke swirled,
The air was black and foul.
When the flames began to lick the trees,
They trembled and they burned;
The sparks flew wide, the fire spread,
Then it twisted and it turned.
Now the devil's child leapt and cried
With sinister delight,
While families slept, inside their homes,
And Fire ruled the night.
The conflagration raced down hill
And trampled through the town.
The sirens screamed, as brimstone rained
On rooftops all around.
Now the bellow-winds cracked their cheeks
And Fury whipped the flames.
Terror shrieked, as people ran,
Desperate to be saved.
In the darkness and the reddish glow
They panicked and they fled,
While all around, the monster grew,
And Fire reaped the dead.
When the morning dimmed, an acrid smoke
Arose and choked the Earth.
Like blackened snow, the ashes fell;
As if the land were cursed.
When the seventh day had come and gone
The rain began to fall,
The fire died; we looked around—
There was nothing left at all.
Among the dead and badly burned
The Devil growled and grinned.
He’d had his feast; he’d come to glut;
Then he withered with the wind.
And where was God in all of this?
Asleep, awake, or bored?
As the devil rampaged on the earth
And Hell began to roar.
